Botox Cosmetic FDA-approved for Vertical Neck Bands

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) has received FDA approval for moderate to severe vertical bands connecting the jaw and neck (platysma bands), and Drs. Hamori and DiEdwardo can now address patients who are bothered by this issue.

Botox platysma neck bands

The platysma muscle is a thin muscle that covers the neck and extends over the lower face, that when contracted can cause the appearance of vertical bands on the neck. The contracted bands can also create a less defined jawline.

Now we can treat patients with FDA-approved doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic that work beneath the surface to temporarily reduce the underlying muscle activity and improve the appearance of the bands connecting the neck and jaw.

Botox Cosmetic is now approved for use in four aesthetic indications: Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet lines, and now platysma bands.

If you are bothered by neck bands, request a full face consultation with Dr. Hamori or Dr. DiEdwardo, both designated ExpertInjectors.

What Is an ExpertInjector?

Expert Injector billboard

Did you know that virtually any physician can purchase and administer injectables? That's more than 1 million doctors who are allowed to perform cosmetic injectables in the U.S. — and less than 3% who have appropriate qualifications. You can rely on the ExpertInjector™ designation, the only organization to have the endorsement of the prestigious American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society for Dermatological Surgery.

Beware of doctors practicing outside of their specialty, offering cosmetic injectables without proper training. This puts you at risk of mediocre or unexpected results, even deformity. Be sure to research your injector, and be aware of these red flags that may indicate a specific physician is not duly qualified.

Dr. Hamori is an ExpertInjector. Look for this title or seal indicating your doctor has specific training to offer facial fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Sculptra and more, and denerving agents such as Botox and Dysport.

Botox: How To Get the Most from Your Treatment

Don't trust just anyone with your face. While you may receive offers for discount pricing on Botox® from family doctors, dentists and nurses — the lowest cost should not be the biggest factor in determining whom you trust with your Botox injections.

In this video from the Plastic Surgery Channel, Dr. Hamori who is a board certified plastic surgeon with the designation of Expert Injector, explains how she puts her experience of more than 16 years and her knowledge of facial anatomy to work for every patient when she performs a "dynamic assessment."

"I ask them to move their brows, I ask them what shape of brow they like. Do the lines bother them between their eyes? Do their forehead lines bother them? Are they bothered by their crow’s feet?”

Watch the video to learn more.
Dr. Hamori does all facial injectables herself in her offices in Duxbury, MA. Check out the array of facial fillers and injectables and how they are used. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Hamori, please call the office at 781-924-2200.

Is Your Man A Botox Guy?

Top 5 Non-surgical cosmetic treatments: Men v. Women

Based on the same 2011 data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that we blogged about last month, here is a look at how men and women differ in the cosmetic treatments they are choosing. First, lets set the record straight, in this study women represent 91% of all cosmetic procedures, and men only 9%. Among the minimally-invasive procedures, women outnumber men more than 10 to 1 — however, the number of men getting these non-surgical treatment rose 8% from 2010 to 2011 (women's growth from the previous year was 6%).

The number one treatment for both men and women was Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox® and Dysport™). The genders share the other Top 5 treatments as well (laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and facial fillers), just in a different order. Here's a look (below) at how they differ by gender.

Is your man secretly considering a cosmetic treatment? Maybe it's time to ask!

Cosmetic Injectables Come Out of the Closet!

I thought I'd pass along this interesting news just released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). According to a survey conducted by the society's research foundation, most consumers of cosmetic injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers do not hide their use of the treatments. Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents (87 percent) openly discuss their injectable treatments with others, and 7 out of 10 (70 percent) received support from the people they told.

Who are these people? According to the survey, they tend to be:
• married
• working mothers between 41-55 years of age
• with household incomes of under $100,000.
The survey also found that these women are health-conscious
• 95 percent exercise
• 78 percent practice healthy eating habits.

For more information on this study, see the full press release here.

Restylane lasts longer and longer

Exciting news in the WSJ today....Restylane, a hyaluronic acid soft tissue filler FDA approved for wrinkle correction of naso labial folds was found in a small study, 11 patients, to increase collagen production! I have noticed that in some patients Restylane has lasted longer and longer with each treatment. It will be interesting to see if Juvederm, Allergan's new hylanuronic filler, will do the same.

My patients love the quick results with fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm, especially when they are combined with Botox. I have noticed less and less requests for mini-facelifts and more and more for fillers. Radiesse another newly approved filler lasts a bit longer than the hyaluronic acids and is quite popular in the lower face. It will be interesting to see if it too, like Restylane, helps build up collagen lost due to aging and UV damage.
