FDA Approves Sculptra Injectable for Cheek Wrinkles

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April approved Sculptra, an injectable poly-L-lactic acid, for the correction of cheek wrinkles.

 

A popular dermal filler, Sculptra was first approved in 2004 and has long been used for facial rejuvenation, focusing primarily on restoring lost volume and combating sagging skin. According to Dr. Hamori, the recent FDA approval for the correction of cheek wrinkles, "reinforces Sculptra's relevance, effectiveness and safety in the aesthetic injectable toolkit.” Dr. Hamori has long used Sculptra to treat deep folds between the nose and mouth (or smile line), marionette lines and chin wrinkles.

The Good News on Sculptra

Since it was approved by the FDA last July, Sculptra has been gaining popularity to become one of my most frequent treatments. In the right hands, Sculptra® Aesthetic is a truly breakthrough product. It allows me to truly "sculpt" the face and add volume to the chin, cheeks and temples — achieving facial balance and restoring a youthful look in a way that is much more subtle and longer lasting than what has been possible with other traditional fillers.

Patients, both men and women, in their 40s and 50s who have lost some facial fullness resulting in marionette lines and other facial sagging and creasing, have been extremely pleased with Sculptra's effect.

Sculptra induces natural collagen growth slowly over time, and it lasts for up to 2 years and more. Because results develop slowly others don't notice a sudden change in your appearance. As I've mentioned on this blog before, I had the treatment 2 years ago (see my before and after photos). FDA approved for cosmetic facial use, Sculptra Aesthetic was profiled on the Today Show. It's an interesting piece for anyone considering using Sculptra injections as they present both the pros and cons, which only emphasizes how important it is to visit a specifically trained plastic surgeon or dermatologist for these injections.

As with all injectibles, I will provide patients with a thorough medical review to assess whether they are a good candidate for the product. I might remind you that, as I mentioned in a previous post, I have had the injections myself, 2 years ago, and have been very pleased with the results (see Sculptra before and after).

The Liquid Facelift — Sculptra Featured on CBS The Early Show

The newly FDA-approved Sculptra®Aesthetic was featured yesterday on CBS The Early Show. It's being called the "liquid facelift" because the facial volumizing injectible increases collagen and its benefits can last for up to 2 years. The treatment has been available overseas for years, and just recently received approval in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration.

I am very excited that the FDA has finally approved Sculptra®Aesthetic for cosmetic use. The product is ideal for women in their 40's who have noticed facial skin thinning and sagginess. I had Sculptra injections 2 years ago and love the results. Injections take about 20 minutes in the office and hurt much less then hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Perlane or Juvederm.
