Prejuvenation: This is not your mother’s anti-aging routine

Women and men in their 20s and 30s are adopting “prejuvenation” treatments to delay the onset of signs of facial aging

What is prejuvenation?

Prejuvenation is a relatively new term in aesthetic medicine that refers to preventative anti-aging treatments—essentially, taking steps proactively before visible signs of aging appear to keep that youthful look going.

  • The word (and concept) combines "prevention" and "rejuvenation."
  • It’s popular among people in their 20s and 30s who want to delay the aging process rather than correct it later.
Some common prejuvenation treatments include:

  • Botox (neuromodulators): Used to relax or immobilize muscles to prevent dynamic wrinkles like frown lines or crow’s feet. Think “proactive” verses “reactive.” When used early these treatments help prevent etching in of deep lines rather than requiring more aggressive interventions (lasers, chemical peels, fillers) to reverse them later.
  • Facial fillers: Injectable biostimulators such as Sculptra and Radiesse can promote the body’s natural collagen production, setting us up for success in the future by improving skin quality and facial structure.
  • Medical-grade skincare: Adopting sunscreens and antioxidants such as Vitamin C plays an important roll in protecting our skin from environmental damage, while retinoids help to increase cellular turnover and improve skin quality.
  • Laser or light-based treatments: Non-surgical technologies to improve skin tone and texture and boost collagen before deeper wrinkles set in.
  • Microneedling or chemical peels: A variety of procedures to stimulate skin renewal and collagen production to tighten and maintain healthy appearance.
The goal: With selective prejuvenation treatments, patients can expect to age gracefully by proactively supporting the skin’s health and structure— thereby delaying or requiring fewer invasive procedures later on.
