Gynecological Cosmetic Surgeries on the Rise

I have read this recent article about the increase in patient requests for cosmetic surgery of the vagina and have observed the same trends in my practice. I have performed more than 350 labiaplasty procedures. The complications the article describe refer to vaginal tightening procedures such as laser vaginal rejuvenation. Some docs are using mesh in the posterior wall of the vagina to help tighten the pelvic floor muscles. This mesh can become infected and erode or wear thru the delicate mucosa or moist inner vaginal skin.

Cosmetic labiaplasty, clitoral hood reduction and labia majora reduction have a high patient satisfaction rate and low complication rate when performed by plastic surgeons or gynecologists trained in plastic surgery. The vaginal tightening procedures can also be done safely but they are usually done for prolapse or droopiness of the inner vagina interfering with moving the bowels or urinating. Procedures to tighten the vagina for sexual enhancement can be risky.
